What is BMI or Body Mass Index?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight that applies to both adult men and women.

Knowing your Body Mass Index number is essential since it indicates if an individual is in a range for optimum health. If the number is below a healthy range, a physician might urge the individual to gain some weight. Conversely, an individual who is above the healthy range could be urged to lose weight.

If your BMI is over 24.9, some of the common risks and diseases include:

  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Gall Bladder Disease
  • Colon and Breast Cancer
  • Osteoarthritis

If your BMI is less than 18.5, you may be at risk for the following diseases:

  • Lower Immune Function
  • Digestive Disease
  • Respiratory Disease
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Falls and Fractures
